Our Hope

Came across this quote the other day- it's well over 10 years old, and yet... i encourage each to ponder it many times as I have.

"Where is the hope? I meet millions who say they feel demoralized by the decay around us. where is the hope? the hope that each of us has is not in who governs us, or what laws are passed, or what great things we do as a nation. Our hope is the power of God working through the hearts of people. And that’s where our hope is in this country, that’s where our hope is in life"

- a few Christians I know seem to have forgotten this. And it makes me think some of the Christian leaders out there trying to manipulate the election have forgotten as well. I myself post this because I needed to be reminded.

ps- props to the person who can post via reply to this the origins of this quote.

Billy Graham. Probably heard on the Heaven in the Real World album, title track.

If the topic is hope, then I would actually contend that both candidates have been made out by some to offer a messianic kind of hope (saving us from unemployment, healthcare costs, a tough economy, an unpopular war, or what have you).

I'd actually also push back and ask Billy Graham (if that's who it was) if he could be more specific. "Hope" can be a vague term unless we also clearly identify what it is we need saving from (there are probably more Biblically specific words than "decay"), how we got to the point of needing saving, and exactly what a redeemed world looks like.

I wonder if a sermon preached at my church a couple weeks ago would be up this alley for you: Why the Election Matters and Why it Doesn't. If you can listen to it, let me know what you think.

i'm sorry, luke, but you are off a bit on the quote. at least, partially. yes, it was from SCC's 'Heaven in the Real World', but it was not Billy Graham.

regardless of that, i like your thoughts on asking to be a bit more specific. However, ultimately, what i was trying to hit here is that I talk to so many who seem to think that elections and the 'right' politician are the most important thing in life in our country. They seem to think that voting in "God's man" is of sole importance. I was trying to use this quote to bring about a reminder that, as Christians, we should not put our trust and faith in politics, governments, candidates or anything else in this world. "Some may trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of our God" (Ps. 20:7- also see Is. 31:1).

i'm going to leave off here and take my other thought to a new blog...

Also, i appreciate the link to the sermon- i have not had the opportunity yet to listen, but the title intrigues me as it seems to wrap up my feelings.
